Frequently Asked Questions

What is Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)?

According the the Canadian College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia a Registered Massage Therapist is: "A health professional regulated by CMTBC under BC’s Health Professions Act. Applicants for registration with CMTBC have completed post-secondary education in clinical applications of health sciences in massage therapy settings, and must meet CMTBC’s rigorous entry-level requirements. RMTs are subject to: CMTBC’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. The requirements of the Health Professions Act and regulations made under the Act. Standards of professional conduct. CMTBC’s quality assurance program, which ensures ongoing professional currency and development." Our scope of practice includes:  assessment of soft tissue and joints of the body, and treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction, injury, pain and disorders of soft tissue and joints of the body by manipulation, mobilization, and other manual methods.” RMTs in BC have extensive training in anatomy and physiology, and are able to treat and assess not only muscles, but also bones, joints, nerves, fascia, and ligaments.

What should I expect at my first RMT treatment?

During your Appointment you can expect a 5-10 minute intake process, during which your therapist will go over your health history, conduct orthopaedic assessments, and discuss the treatment plan and goals. All of this is to ensure a safe and effect treatment. They will step out of the room while you get on the table. During treatment they will only undrape the areas to be worked on. Your therapist will check in to make sure the techniques and pressure are within your comfort levels to ensure a safe and effective treatment. The remainder of your treatment will be reserved for you to take your time getting up, and to check-in with your therapist for any concerns, questions, or home exercises.

Can My RMT direct bill to my insurance plan?

While this is specific to each practitioner, currently both Haley and Patti are able to direct bill to most insurance plans. Haley is set up to bill to the following: • Equitable • First Canadian • GMS Carriers 49 and 50 • GroupHEALTH • GroupSource • Industrial Alliance • Johnson Inc. • Johnston Group • LiUNA Local 183 • LiUNA Local 506 • Major Group (AdjudiCare) • Manion • Manulife Financial • Maximum Benefit • MDM Insurance Services • Pacific Blue Cross • People Corporation • RWAM • Sunlife • Telus AdjudiCare • Beneva • BPA • Canada Life • Canada Life - PSHCP • Canadian Construction Workers Union • Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance • CINUP • ClaimSecure • Coughlin & Associates • Cowan Insurance Group • D.A. Townley • Desjardins Insurance • Simply Benefits • Union Benefits • UV Insurance • Green shield • Pacific blue cross • Medavie blue cross Alternatively, if we are unable to direct bill for you, payment can be accepted via cash, e-transfer, VISA & MasterCard and you can submit your receipt for reimbursement. At this time Haley does not accept open ICBC claims, and cannot direct bill your appointment if you have an open ICBC claim

Do I have to get undressed during my Massage?

Absolutely not! If you would like to keep all or certain clothing items on please do so. Your therapist can work through any fabric and adjust their treatment plan to suit your comfort level. You never have to do anything that you are uncomfortable with.

Is Massage safe for me?

If you have any health concerns or conditions, are pregnant, or simply worried massage may not be right for you, please check in with your primary care provider. For many conditions, massage can be made safe and effective by modifying pressure, posture, temperatures, and duration. During the treatment I will check in with you often to ensure you are feeling comfortable and safe with the techniques and pressure. ALWAYS let your practitioner know if you are in pain or feeling discomfort so we can work together to keep the treatment safe and effective.

What is your Cancellation Policy?

We require 24 hours notice to cancel an appointment without a fee. Your appointment time is reserved just for you. A late cancellation leaves a hole in the therapists’ day that could have been filled by another patient. As such, we require 24 hours notice for any cancellations or changes to your appointment to avoid a fee up to the full cost of the missed appointment. Missed appointment fees cannot be billed to insurance.

Can the RMTs at Spruce do deep tissue or therapeutic massage?
